Software Engineer, Applied Research

Automated Insights’ mission is to make the world’s data understandable. In 2016, our Wordsmith platform turned raw data into 1.5 billion human-sounding narratives—and we’re just getting started.

Ai’s Labs team is looking for an experienced engineer to help us grow our technological lead in the emerging Natural Language Generation market. The Labs team performs applied research with the goal of shipping features that make Wordsmith more powerful, more magical, and easier to use. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to make a big impact on a young SaaS product in a growing engineering organization. You’ll take ownership over the entire lifetime of your projects, guiding them from ideation to production. And you’ll collaborate with other engineers, as well as our sales, marketing, and customer support teams to maximize the value that your work delivers to customers.

What you’ll do:

  • Conceptualize, prototype, and deliver new algorithms and features that turn open-ended problems into concrete deliverables.
  • Embed with other teams to turn your prototypes into maintainable, production microservices.
  • Synthesize feedback from our customers and your colleagues to prioritize projects and aid with developing Wordsmith’s technical roadmap.
  • Be a member of the larger software engineering and data science communities by sharing your work at conferences and on our tech blog.

We're looking for people who have:

  • 2+ years of experience shipping projects on a professional software development team.
  • Excellent programming skills. Our team develops primarily in Python (with the PyData stack) and NodeJS,  but we’re most interested in people who can pick up new technologies quickly.
  • A strong background in computer science fundamentals—in this role, you’ll read academic papers and actually use big-O notation.
  • Exposure to machine learning fundamentals, but the wisdom to not see every problem as a nail in search of a hammer.
  • A keen product sense, the ability to empathize with customers, and a drive to constantly innovate.

Bonus points if you have:

  • A background in academic or industrial research.
  • An MS or PhD in computer science, math, or a related, quantitative discipline.
  • Familiarity with the state-of-the-art in natural language technology.
